If you’re using Chrome, you may be prompted to accept updated permissions. This article explains what this means, why it's happening, and how to move forward.
In this article:
Why does this prompt appear?
We recently released an update to the UserTesting Browser Recorder Extension. This update can trigger a permissions prompt in Chrome after the browser restarts. This prompt is part of Chrome’s normal behavior when an extension update includes new permissions.
What do the new permissions mean?
Chrome may request access labeled “Read your browsing history.”
The extension helps your test instructions appear at the right time, especially when you switch between tabs during a test. The extension does not collect, track, or store your browsing history or unrelated data.
What do I do?
If Chrome prompts you to update permissions
- Review the request.
- Select Accept to continue.
- Continue to your test as usual.
If you don't accept the permission
The extension will be disabled. In that case, you can either:
- Re-enable the extension in Chrome’s settings.
- Reinstall the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
I haven’t received this prompt. Is something wrong?
Not at all. The prompt only appears if Chrome detects the updated extension after you've restarted your browser.
Why does Chrome request access to my browsing history?
This permission allows the extension to detect when test pages load, which ensures your test instructions work correctly. No browsing data is collected or stored.
Can I complete tests without accepting the new permission?
No. Once Chrome updates the extension, accepting the permission is required to continue.
